 Dezincification-resistant brass DZR (CR Brass) has been around for several years, however we still come across owners who are unsure if they should use it for below the waterline. There has now been several reports from the Copper Development Association and other sources, stating the expected corrosion levels in salt water.
Data from the reports show that in just salt water, not considering other influencing factors such as galvanic or electrolytic corrosion, naval brass has an expected corrosion rate of between 0.05 and 0.2mm/year while some other brass alloys such as Muntz metal can corrode at over 0.2mm/year, with plug type corrosion reaching 0.5mm/year due to dezincification.
Both Bronze and DZR brass are expected to remain under 0.1 mm/year, in fact an experiment lasting a whole year, showed DZR brass to have a corrosion rate of just 0.02mm/year. So to try and put that into some form of context, if the DZR fitting being tested carried on corroding at 0.02mm/year it would take 50 years to corrode just 1mm, which is 5 times longer then what is expected from Bronze or DZR and 25 times longer than the brass alloy Muntz metal mentioned above. We supply DZR brass as we believe it to be absolutely fit for purpose.
